Stories and slots have always been an odd pair. There’s always some semblance of a plot going on, as is required by the theme. But very rarely do we see it explored in any great detail. NetEnt’s Halloween Jack is the only one that we can think of recently. And even then, it placed all the story in the last tab, hidden away from most players. Microgaming took a much different approach with this game – one that we’ve never seen other developers replicate.
Immortal Romance’s RTP ranges between 96.01% to 96.86%, and no matter which way you slice it, it’s above average. And if that’s not enough for you, there are also four different free spins! But that’s not the only special feature available in this release. The developers also treat you to the Wild Desire bonus, that can turn all five reels completely Wild! Use both to your advantage, and you could walk away with a 12,150x jackpot.
This slot’s visuals aren’t super impressive all the time, but they have their moments. All the cool animations are saved for special features, like when Wild Desire is triggered. The animation quality of the blood drip rivals modern games! Veteran gamblers might recognize Immortal Romance’s similarities to Thunderstruck 2, right down to the RTP and bonuses. And they’d be right! Microgaming’s most popular release is actually a clone of their previous slot.
The game has a medium volatility, and a progression system built into its gameplay. To unlock the different free spins, players will have to trigger the special feature multiple times. Only after a certain number of triggers do different free spins become available. On one hand, we like the feeling of progress this creates. But it also keeps the most valuable bonuses out of reach until you’ve sunk a lot of cash into the release. Not the most gambler friendly approach.
With 243 ways to win, there’s no turning individual paylines on and off. Instead, players can only adjust the coin value and the number of coin per payline. This means your minimum stake is only ₹30, whereas the maximum goes up to ₹600 on every spin. Great for casual gamblers, though we can imagine high rollers frothing at the mouth for such a low maximum bet. Then again, with a jackpot as big as this one, we can understand why Microgaming set it that low.
Usually, the story is told through the symbol design. There’s little of that here. The playing card royals are more decorated than usual, but don’t contribute to the tale. The more valuable icons introduce the characters and the setting. An ancient scroll, a beautiful university, and our four protagonists: Amber, Troy, Michael and Sarah. One part of the story can be heard through the voice over within the payline. And to find out what happens next, you’ll need the free spins.
Free Spins: There are four different types of free spins in Immortal Romance. Each one comes with different mechanics, and expands the story of its associated character. You start with Amber’s bonus unlocked, and have to keep hitting the special feature to unlock new ones. It’s a dastardly design by Microgaming! They keep us hooked by making us grind for better bonuses and the resolution to each character’s story.
Wild Desire: Randomly transforms up to five reels and turns them fully Wild.
While the graphics aren’t as great as they were when it first launched, they still get the job done. The developers went all out to invest players into the story. And if you’re hooked, you won’t stop until you learn Sarah’s secret.
Gameplay being ‘borrowed’ from another game by the same developer did not sit well with us. That said, we’re willing to look through Microgaming’s fingers. All the core mechanics are the same, but each one has been improved. And that’s good enough for us.
